Description
Hickory Hill, Circa 1804, English Manor Historic Home built from hickory, ash, hard pine and butternut, from the surrounding woodlands near Wilson, Louisiana. Hickory Hill was one of the fine old homes to survive the Civil War, although it lay on the path of heavy skirmishes. The red bricks were baked in wooden molds on the premises and the square cut wooden pegs, used instead of nails, as well as the woodwork, were fashioned by hand. Tiger Oak used for doors and walls. The walls are 18 inches thick. On the front, four tall white plastered brick columns rise to a fan-lighted pediment. The columns are of the Doric order, the outer ones square and the two center ones round. Both upper and lower great galleries are enclosed at each end by a brick wall. Each of the eight rooms has a fireplace with hand carved mantels. In the garden, camellias, azaleas, wild olive, crepe myrtles, and tung oil trees, still grow in wild profusion. There are 2 ponds on property. Two state or the art Tran a/c units. Behind the home there is a 3 room bonus space attached by covered walkway could be used as outdoor kitchen, meeting rooms, weekend getaway, lodge, airbnb, etc. Beams under the home were pit sawn on top and hand hewn on bottom. Trusses add additional support under the home. Vernacular or domestic architecture, Hickory Hill is impressive in scale. It is three stories in height including the attic, built solidly of brick with a broad wooden pediment crowning the entire front facade. The high basement is totally functional with both doors and windows for access and ventilation. A number of short, narrow windows without molded surrounds are protected by iron bars and the doors are simple, paneled, and have minimal surrounds in basement. Hickory Hill qualifies for a residential home, bed and breakfast inn, airbnb property, possibilities are endless!
